Sizing a winch
The working rule is line pull rated at one and a half times the loaded weight of the vehicle you intend to recover — and that is the gross weight with fuel, gear and passengers, not the dry curb weight on the door sticker. Under-sizing a winch does not just slow the pull, it cooks the motor.
Synthetic line is lighter, safer when it fails and easier to handle bare-handed, but it abrades on rock and degrades in UV. Steel cable tolerates abuse and stores energy when it snaps, which is why it wants a damper. Whichever you run, the winch is only as good as what it is bolted to — a winch-rated mount or bumper is not optional.
