About this product

Softopper supplies this soft top. Ships free to the lower 48 in 1–2 business days.

What a Softopper is

A Softopper is a collapsible truck cap. Where a fiberglass cap is a rigid shell you bolt on and then live with, this is a PVC-coated sailcloth canopy stretched over an anodized aluminum frame that folds forward against the cab in about a minute and stands back up just as fast. Closed, it gives you a full-height, weather-protected, cab-high bed. Folded, you have an open bed with a soft bundle at the bulkhead. Off entirely — and it comes off in minutes without tools once the clamps are loose — you have a bare truck.

That is the whole argument for it. Most people who buy a hard cap find out within a year that they need the bed open occasionally and now have a hundred-plus-pound shell with nowhere to store it. A Softopper removes that decision.

How it goes together

Clamp-on, no drilling. The frame sits on the bed rails, the clamps pull it down, and the fabric tensions over it. It is a job you can do alone in an afternoon the first time, and a five-minute job after that. Because nothing is drilled, the bed is unmarked when it comes off. Instruction sheets are on our installation guides page.

The rear window unzips and rolls up, and the side windows do too, so you can run it fully closed, fully open, or ventilated. Options exist beyond the standard sailcloth — a premium woven twill, and camouflage patterns — along with tinted and mesh window choices. Not every combination is listed online; tell us what you want and we will price it.

Worth knowing before you order

  • It is not a security enclosure. It is fabric with zippers. It keeps weather and casual eyes off your cargo. It will not stop anyone with a pocket knife, and it should not be treated as a locked bed. If you are storing tools overnight in a city, buy a lockable hard cap or a toolbox.
  • Cold weather and the vinyl windows. Clear vinyl gets brittle below about 40°F. Folding or retracting the top in freezing weather can crack the windows, and doing so is excluded from the warranty. In winter, either leave it standing or warm the vehicle first.
  • The warranty is tiered and short. One year on materials and workmanship, six months on zippers, three months on the vinyl windows. That is shorter than a hard cap and worth weighing against the price and the versatility.
  • Zippers need looking after. Grit, road salt and dust are what kill them. A rinse and an occasional zipper lubricant is most of the maintenance this thing asks for, and it is the difference between zippers that last and zippers that do not.
  • It is not silent. Fabric over a frame at highway speed makes more noise than a fiberglass shell, and in a crosswind you will hear it. The premium twill, with its heavier three-layer construction, is quieter than the standard sailcloth.
  • Height. It stands cab-high. If you park in a garage where your existing truck barely clears, measure before you order.

Fitment

Softoppers are made for specific trucks and bed lengths, and the range covers a lot of older vehicles as well as current ones. Start from shop by truck, or measure your bed and give us the number if you are unsure. Older and less common applications are exactly where fitment goes wrong, so on anything pre-2010 we would rather you called us before ordering. Every order is checked by hand against your truck and backed by our fitment guarantee.

Warranty and returns

Softopper warrants the product free from defects in material and workmanship for one year under normal use and proper maintenance. Vinyl windows are warranted for three months and zippers for six, because grit, road grime and abrasive cleaners are what wear them rather than any defect. Retracting or closing the top below 40°F can crack clear vinyl and can void the window warranty. On certain older applications the side curtain windows carry a 45-day warranty — ask us and we will tell you which applies to your truck. See our warranty policy and returns policy for how we handle a claim.
